Setting your weight loss goals

One of the biggest problems that is plaguing Americans for the last decade is definitely obesity.  Recent statistics show that there is a serious upward increase in obesity and in being overweight compared to the previous 50 years.  Of course, there are a lot of reasons for this:  First of all, we live very hectic lives that are intertwined with stress.  To top it off, many people don’t exercise regularly and to make it worse, they don’t have an active life style either due to living in offices and skyscrapers.  Also, eating of fast food such as pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers, fried chicken and tacos does not help either.  When all of the reasons above are coupled together, it creates a lethal combination that can cause serious problems for your health.  The best thing that can happen is perhaps you will just gain weight, but as you know becoming overweight causes a horde of other problems such as Type II Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, and artery hardening etc.  Thus losing weight becomes imperative when you are above your figure.  However, it is important to know how to set your weight loss goals, so that you can focus on your weight loss objective and also be successful in your endeavor.

In order to set your weight loss goals, you will have to make sure that you know what you expect from your body and from yourself as well.  As you can see from the millions of people around you losing weight is not an easy task and this is why hundreds and maybe thousands of diets and weight loss programs exist.  However, the important point lies in the fact that first you will have to decide your reasons for losing weight.

For some people losing weight is not an option but a necessity.  Medically speaking if you are 10 percent of your ideal weight or 10 percent over your “weight / height index” then you will have no choice but to lose weight for health reasons.  This is very important, as so much increased weight will affect your various bodily systems.  First of all, your heart will try to pump more blood to compensate for the added mass and thus added oxygen need for tissues.  In fact, your heart will be working overtime like crazy to be able to keep up with your body’s demand.  This can be very bad for your cardiovascular system as your heart will get bigger (since it is a muscle) and this will upset the delicate balance that keeps your cardiovascular system in check.  Also if you are overweight, then your body will accumulate toxins and various lipid cells in your arteries and in your tissues.  This is a very bad occurrence, as this can lead to the hardening of your arteries which will further tax your cardiovascular system.  In any case, all of this can be very bad for you and you will need to get on a rapid weight loss program to regain the balance that your body has lost.  Also, recent research shows that thickening of the belly is invariably linked to Type II Diabetes in adults.  Again losing weight will help you greatly in your endeavor as the chances of you getting Diabetes will fall dramatically when you lose weight and regain your ideal weight and your ideal height / weight ratio.

Of course, for some people losing weight and shedding those few extra pounds are important for aesthetic reasons.  This is especially true for people who are overweight less than %10 of their ideal weight.  Although this difference may not pose health risks, losing those extra pounds will make yourself feel better and also it will help you look lean and fit. A person who is their ideal weight will move around better and also fell better and more energetic.  It must not be forgotten that extra pounds can always make someone lethargic very easily.

However, you should make sure that you are losing weight for the right reasons in order to be successful.  If you are just losing weight to fit into a specific clothing size then you will need to try out a more mild program.  However, if you are trying to lose weight for a more serious health purpose, then you will need to try out a more aggressive weight loss plan to succeed in your work.  Also if you are not sure whether you should lose weight, then you can easily consult several measurements on various charts to see if you are in a borderline case.  One of the criteria that you can use to see your situation is the abdominal girth.  Abdominal girth is the measurement of the abdomen.  The usual criterion for the abdominal girth measurement is the circumference of the abdomen near the belly button waist line. The abdominal girth should be about 35 inches where woman are concerned.  If you are a man then your abdominal girth should be below 40 inches as a general rule.  As a second ratio, you can use the Waist to Hip Ratio.  If you are a women with a waist to hip ratio, then if it is higher than 0.8, you should definitely think about starting a diet.  However, if you are a man, then any waist to Hip ratio higher than 1.0 is generally a call for a weight loss program.

Of course, all of the criteria stated above are just general guidelines.  They are not rules set in stone.  You must be aware of your condition when making a decision to start a weight loss program.  In addition, when you start a weight loss program then you should keep track of your condition.  Just measuring yourself on a bathroom scale will not be a very realistic solution as it can be misleading.  You will need to take daily measurements of your Abdominal Girth or Waist Hip Ratio too besides your weight measurements on the scale.  This way you can get a clearer picture of how much fat you are burning.  In any case, setting your weight loss goals properly and recording your achievements can be the road to success in a weight loss plan
